Tyranny

Tyranny, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary is the use of oppressive power, usually by a government.

An oppressive government is often labeled a tyranny.

A mob or a majority can be tyrannical too.

Either way, oppression lies at the heart of the idea.

The founders of our country who broke with Britain in 1776 wanted an end to English tyranny.

The framers of our Constitution in 1787 wanted to avoid the tyranny of both kings and mobs.  That desire is what led to the creation of our system of federalism, checks and balances, and protected political and civil rights.
