All Elections Should Have These

Not all elections are the same. Even so, some principles should apply to every election. These include:

  • a regular schedule of elections
  • freedom to vote, campaign, and run for office without fear or violence
  • freedom of speech
  • freedom of assembly
  • freedom to report on competitors’ proposals and performance
  • fair media
  • access to independent reporting
  • transparent campaign financing
  • accurate vote counting and reporting
  • election officials are required to treat all sides fairly
  • an effective electoral justice system to resolve disputes
