Memorial Day is more than a holiday. It is a solemn day of remembrance—an opportunity to honor the men and women who served in our armed forces and sacrificed their lives and limbs in defense of the values we aspire to uphold as a nation.
They served with courage, believing in a country where the people should determine their own future rather than kings, dictators, or oligarchs.
Many fought under the banner of liberty, equal justice, and representative government, even at times when those ideals were imperfectly realized at home.
Their sacrifice calls us not only to gratitude but to reflection.
Let us honor them today, and every day, by working together across parties and ideologies to strengthening the institutions that safeguard our freedom:
- representation and accountability through free and fair elections,
- checks and balances on power through the separation and sharing of powers, and
- protections against tyranny through civil liberties and civil rights, due process, and equal treatment under the law.
These are not partisan goals. They are the foundation of a free society, and the fulfillment of the promises generations of Americans have given their lives to defend.
